Can you tell us about your journey with poetry?
For me, writing poetry is a form of therapy. It sounds cliche but it's true. I have a lot of feelings, especially about certain relationships I've endured, and I need a place to put them. I like being able to write down my thoughts and feelings and then later add a good metaphor or a certain phrase that just stings the heart a little.
I've always been a writer, but it wasn't until college (sometime around 2015 maybe?) that I decided to dip my toes into the poetry world. I studied creative writing with a concentration in poetry and I was the only senior in the writing major with that genre. My senior thesis was a collection of about 30 poems -- and some of those poems have been rewritten and are included in my book! I moved to Brooklyn right after college and got a job writing at Thought Catalog, where I eventually pitched my manuscript to my boss and the development of publishing my book came to be!
Are there any spots in NYC you’d recommend for those looking for a relaxing place to read?
I don't know if there are many "relaxing" places in Manhattan and Brooklyn, per se. However, there are some coffee shops around that could be decent if you're good at tuning out the rest of the world! I like TB Coffee House in Clinton Hill, Maman in Greenpoint, Happy Bones in Lower Manhattan (if you catch them on a good, not busy day!), and Black Star Cafe in Williamsburg. Also, Prospect Park and Central Park during the warmer months are pretty solid spots too!
