Tell us more about who you are and what you do!
Hey! I'm Melissa. I'm a fashion designer and illustrator, and I run my own design studio called Wave Hello. I love blending creativity with a mindful and elevated design to help brands tell their unique stories.
How did you get started with your studio, Wave Hello?
I started Wave Hello back in 2021 because I wanted to explore my creativity beyond just graphic tees. I wanted to combine my love for photography and branding all under one roof. It's been an awesome journey seeing everything come together and being able to work with so many cool brands

What things are currently inspiring you when working on graphics for either personal projects or clients?
When it comes to inspiration, I’m always drawn to vintage graphics. I love spending weekends at flea markets, discovering old t-shirts from the '70s and '80s that spark my creativity. Additionally, I find immense inspiration in music and nature. There’s something incredibly powerful about how these elements can influence design, bringing a timeless and organic feel to my work.

What drew you to apparel graphics over other forms of art?
I think the biggest thing for me is that I've always loved to draw and I've always loved fashion. When I figured out there was a spot in the industry for combining the two, I was blown away. I mean, my workday is drawing and picking out fabrics and washes, and then seeing people actually wearing something I created? Nothing beats that feeling!
What is your go-to #WFH outfit that still makes you feel ready for the work day?
I'm always in jeans! If I wear sweatpants at home, I just don’t feel good and it makes me feel less energized. So, I usually throw on a pair of jeans with a chunky knit or a cozy sweatshirt.

What is your process for putting together a good outfit every day?
For me, it’s all about having good basics and being comfortable. Lately, I've been focusing more on my capsule wardrobe and being mindful about not overspending on clothes. Plus, I’m running out of space, so I prioritize pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. I’m totally an outfit repeater at heart, haha.
Are there other areas of your life that you enjoy expressing yourself artistically outside of work?
I’ve always loved painting and wish I did more of it day-to-day. I also love ceramics and photography. It’s sometimes hard to express myself creatively outside of work because my work blends so much with my daily life. One of my goals for 2024 is to create for fun, without any strings attached.

Are there any trends you’re looking forward to experimenting with this spring/summer?
I’m really into that eclectic grandpa style right now. I love a good trucker hat, a vest or knit, some jeans, and chunky sneakers. Maybe I’ll try some boxer shorts or gingham prints too. Lately, my style has been all about comfort, with a bit of a “soft tomboy” vibe.
How are you styling your JBD jeans this spring?
You’ll see me in a neutral outfit, adding chunky loafers and belts, and mixing in some prints like stripes or natural textures like linen shirts and vests. I always accessorize with gold jewelry to keep it clean and chic.
